Çukurcuma’da Bir Hayalet Kadın! * A Ghost Woman in Çukurcuma!

1
Ölüm uzun koşumuz, sabit menzilimiz; bakiyesi sadece anılar olan, kalan. O yüzden her birimiz biriktiririz yaşamlarımızı azar azar; resimler, anı nesneler, hediyeler, çerçevelerle.

A Ghost Woman in Çukurcuma!

1
Death, our long distance marathon, our fixed destination, leaving us alone with a remainder of memories. That’s why each and every one of us puts aside his/her life little by little, through photographs, memorable objects, gifts, frames collected. Hoping that someone, some day will find the remains of our lives and shed a light on our souls that faded away long ago. Knowing that eternity rules, but still just out of spite…

2
Only those who chase a dream, an image in their lives, can recognize the light, the glitter disgraced objects bear. They dare to discover the verses, images of lives left to fade away amidst the chaos of daily life. Thus the artist corresponds to both a collector and an amateur detective in Walter Benjamin’s image.

Approaching this portrait created by Komet based on the traces of a woman that are left on the street would be proper by taking this “glitter” into consideration.

3
By means of memorable objects that he juxtaposes with deliberate effort and endeavor, the painter primarily creates draft of a module that locks frozen time and provokes a time travel toward the future.

Subsequently he reveals the silhouette of a woman portrait out of nowhere, by passing over each object he finds, with an invisible brush stroke diligently. On top of the edge of a knife- where birth and decay, death and eros, time and image intersect. And the ghost of a woman appears in Çukurcuma.

4
This portrait/puzzle composed of framed memories, photographs, newspaper cuts, letters and certificates is poured into an aesthetical form in remembrance of the traces of the forgotten life of a republican woman, a pioneer figure representing the bright social life of the past. But owing to these memories rewritten by erasing, traces of hidden traumas not present among those frames mix with the dust of time as well.

It seems as if Ms. Neriman has kept everything she has believed to make her life worthy with an almost obsessive enthusiasm, hoping that they would be discovered some day and therefore has attempted to defeat the mystery of death which we all carry as a hump on our back. That’s exactly why stains leaking out of empty frames not only call for sorrow but also for that (something) which is weird at the same time.

5
It may be a surprise to some, that this heap of memories remaining from Neriman Tuna has been turned into a “Komet exhibition”. But everyone interpreting modern or postmodern arts with the avant-garde, is well aware that since Duchamp, using found objects and making installations with them, form up a ‘re-creation process’ aesthetics. As for Komet’s work, it follows a path of emancipation open to conceptual artistic experiments since the 70s.

6
Well then, who was this ghost woman, Neriman Tuna in reality? The artist rather than answering to this question, is more interested in exposing some findings, respectfully introducing her memoirs for sharing and revealing certain question marks. The rest will be left to history and the efforts of researchers documenting it. What we have in hand, is a framed life found on the street or a spiritual blackbox; glowing with all its glitter…
